Recycling by Poppin.

A few weeks back, Casey, Poppin’s Cheif Culture Officer, decided it was time for everyone in the office to get serious about recycling. And over the last few weeks, all of our habits have improved quite a bit. Here are the easy things we’ve done to make sure we’re recycling whenever possible:

1. Learn A Little.

At our weekly Monday morning meeting, Casey presented a short powerpoint to all of the employees explaining both the importance of recycling and what is recyclable and what is not.

2. Veto our desk trash cans.

Part of our problem had been that it is too easy to just throw all of our trash into our own individual trash cans at our desks. It’s simple, when you have a garbage can, the instinct is to throw whatever trash you have on your desk into it.

Instead now we have one main receptacle for paper recycling in the main part of our office, and we have our regular trash and glass and aluminum recycling in the kitchen. Turns out, having to get up to throw things out makes everyone much more thoughtful about what of their trash can be recycled.

I know this concept sounds annoying. However, just keeping a little pile of garbage on your desktop and making a few trips a day to the trash is really not a big deal. Not to mention, it’s always good to get up from your desk a few more times a day: take a short walk, stretch your legs, say hello to your pal a few desks away.

Poppin Spring Cleaning yielded many cool things for MFTA!

3. Remember your trash could be someone else’s treasure!

So what about all of the non-recyclable items that aren’t really trash? In Poppin’s case this includes: sample products, old foam core boards, and unsaleable (but still useable) products. This is where Materials for the Arts comes in…

Materials for the Arts is a 501c3 organization born from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.  MFTA accepts donations of new or used arts and crafts materials and office and school supplies. They then distribute to individuals from arts and cultural organizations, public schools and various community programs. Twice a week MFTA has allotted times for the aforementioned organization, education and community leaders to explore their enormous selection of donated materials and take with them what they need for their organizations and classrooms.

The best part? Not only does MFTA put supplies in the hands of those who will use and appreciate them, they’ve happily taken our ‘extra stuff’ off of our hands and out of our office space.  Simply put, we we’re able to simultaneously give back and recycle things that, let’s face it, we’d normally just toss.

My point with these tips? Implementing an office recycling program is much simpler than it sounds. So build it into your companies identity, incorporate in your Spring Cleaning, just make it happen.

Consciously Colorful: Converse

The Consciously Colorful Series takes a look at inspirational brands and products that embrace color. Every week we’ll take you through the history of a brand and when and how they became consciously colorful.

Converse Chuck Taylor’s

You can still shop the Classic Colors on Converse.com.

When thinking about iconic brands and products that embrace color, few come to mind before the classic Converse Chuck Taylor’s. However, Chuck Taylor’s have a long history before adding colors and even before Chuck Taylor.

The All Star

Converse Rubber Shoe Company was started by Marquis Mills Converse in 1908. In 1917, Oscar Eduardo Reyes, a High School student at the time, designed a shoe he named the All Star. The shoe had a rubber sole and a canvas body and was designed especially for professional basketball players. In 1921, Charles “Chuck” Taylor joined a basketball team sponsored by the Converse Company called The Converse All Stars. Not only did Chuck where the shoes on the court, he toured High Schools across the United States selling them. Quickly basketball players across the league were wearing All Stars.

The shoe was remodeled in 1923 when Chuck Taylor made improvements to the shoe. Soon after, Converse decided to incorporate Chuck Taylor’s name onto the ankle patch that displayed the Converse All Star logo. The original Converse All Star had three main styles – monochromatic shoe with a black canvas body and black rubber soles, an all white show with blue and red trim and an all black leather and rubber shoe.

Athletes began to wear All Stars in the Olympics and during World War II American soldiers began to wear All Stars in training. By the 1960s, the Converse All Star had already become an American icon.

Color-Coated

After World War II, Converse decided to make some changes to the appearance of the shoe. They decided to make the toe guard and laces and outer wraps white, creating the iconic black and white Converse All Stars we think of today.

In 1957, Converse began to offer the low-cut “Oxford” version in addition to the classic high tops. Soon after they started to produce the shoes in multiple colors.

As it says on the Converse website: “In tumultuous times (the 1960s) legends are born – and from a green and white basketball team to a British invasion, from rooftops to afalfa fields, Converse was along for the ride.”

Post-1968

Somewhere right around 1974, the All Star sneaker got a little bit of a makeover. Remade in colorful suede with a big, bold star on the side, it was built for basketball—but there was something about its brashness and brightness that would make it irresistible to a generation of rockers, skaters and rebellious souls. Then around ’76 came the Pro Leather, an instant favorite in a time when the game needed a vibe.

First came Grandmama. That was a big deal. Then, in 1996, Converse had a hit on its hands with a basketball shoe called the All Star 2000. It was the first attempt at replicating the Chuck Taylor All Star sneaker for contemporary competition, and there was something about its ankle patch, red midsole stripe and no-nonsense approach to the game that at least 1 million people couldn’t resist.

The brand enters its second century by honoring its heritage of seeing things a little differently, loving people who want to change the world for the better, and basically celebrating the spirit of rebellion and originality in basketball, Rock & Roll and anywhere else you find it.

And there you have it — for now… The best stories are the ones that don’t end — the ones you just keep adding to and adding to — all the while marveling at the creative, disruptive, optimistic, courageous ways things evolve from being what they were, to what they are, to what they will become.

What special/unique items do you keep on your desk? Why?

My desk is quite small (which I’m hoping to change soon) so there’s not a lot of space for décor. But hanging above my desk is a grouping of frames with some of my favorite things – notes and ideas, a wedding photo, goofy pics of my husband and I; and artwork that was gifted to me by one of my best friends.

Also, I always make sure that my computer desktop wallpaper matches my iPhone wallpaper which matches my laptop wallpaper. I’m “unique” (read: “a design freak”) like that.

What things on your desktop make you Work Happy?

A cup full of black pens and fine-tip markers. I’m obsessed with pens, and they just look so good all grouped together.

What is your favorite Poppin item on your desk and why?

I love my black ruler – the awesome oversized typography is a total win. I like when everyday objects are given a playful edge.

Fill in the blank: “I always have ______________ on my desk.”

I always have my Moleskine planner on my desk. Try as I might to adapt to a digital calendar, I just love the satisfaction of writing by hand.

What special/unique items do you keep on your desk? Why?

A collage from a photo shoot when our daughter turned one holds special meaning as do Murano glass flowers my husband brought back from Venice when we were dating nearly a decade ago. I adore using a Tory Burch receipt holder to organize all of my receipts and a little metal business card holder I picked up in a boutique in St. Petersburg, Fla. has served me well for nearly 10 years.

What things on your desktop make you Work Happy?

Anything that keeps me organized (I am the master of to-do lists!), photos of my family and little conveniences like my Maybelline Baby Lips (ob-sessed!), Trident tropical twist gum and, at the moment, Essie nail polish I received this week via Birchbox.

What is your favorite Poppin item on your desk and why?

It’s a tie between the lime green ruler – I’m addicted to the shade and the bold numbers – and Poppin’s ultra-streamlined, white tape dispenser.

Fill in the blank: “I always have a notepad and bangles that undoubtedly get stripped off as I’m typing all day on my desk.”

Tumblr

It seems paradoxical or contradictory (or both) to write about Tumblr on a WordPress blog, however, having just started the Poppin Tumblr account, I’m in the early stages of Tumblr-obsessiveness. Yes, I’m about five years behind, I know (do your best to control your inclination to judge).

Here are my top 3 Tumblr obsessions:

1. We Love Stationery

Great inspiration for us Poppin people and just a good time for anyone who loves special stationary and office/school supplies. There is something fabulous about the layout, surrounded by white space. Everything is clean, crisp and simple.

2. The Well-Appointed Desk

It’s all in the name. This Tumblr blog covers everything you could possibly need or want to build your very own Well-Appointed Desk. This site is a great source of inspiration, in terms of products and office interiors. It’s almost like the perfect office products magazine.

3. Things Organized Neatly

The simplest concept turns out to be one of the most visually stimulating blogs I’ve ever seen. There is something about things organized neatly that is just plain pleasing.

Desk Makeover

Cathy Blaney, Executive Vice President of Development for the 9/11 Memorial

A little while back a few members of the Poppin team were able to visit the of the 9/11 Memorial organization. While they left with only the best things to say about Cathy Blaney, the Executive Vice President of Development, her office was a different story. So a few weeks later, Chris and I went back to give Cathy a well-deserved office makeover. Take a peak…

Cathy replaced the 2 old dry erase boards in her office with shiny new Poppin Glass Boards!

Happiness Makes You Smarter

… Maybe not smarter, but according to this Inc.com article, Happiness does make your brain work better.

Happiness Makes Your Brain Work Better

A Harvard psychology researcher explains that rather than thinking of success as the source of happiness, we should think of happiness as a source of success–and one that’s more under our control than we imagine.

According to one positive psychology researcher out of Harvard, as commonsensical as this tendency to chase achievement in order to attain greater happiness may sound, it’s actually got the equation reversed.

In a fascinating (and funny) TEDxBloomington talk, Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage, argues that while we may think success will bring us happiness, the lab-validated truth is that happiness brings us more success.

Reverse the happiness and success formula. We think if we work harder and achieve some entrepreneurial goal, then we’ll be happier. But the research is clear that every time you have a success, your brain changes what success means. So for you and for your team, if happiness is on the opposite side of success, you’ll never get there. But if you increase your levels of happiness in the midst of a challenge, what we find is that all of your success rates rise dramatically – every business outcomes improves.

The brain, it turns out, works significantly better when you’re feeling positive, so developing a sunny outlook allows you to be smarter and more creative. “We found that optimism is the greatest predictor of entrepreneurial success because it allows your brain to perceive more possibilities,” said Achor. “Only 25 percent of job success is based upon IQ. Seventy-five percent is about how your brain believes your behavior matters, connects to other people, and manages stress.”

And changing your mindset is probably less difficult than you imagine. “No one would think that something small could change patterns of pessimism from decades or from genes,” conceded Achor, but he said research proves the doubters wrong. What we found was something as simple as writing down three things you’re grateful for every day for 21 days in a row significantly increases your level of optimism and it holds for the next six months. The research is amazing. It proves we actually can change.”

If you’re more focused on helping your team perform better by being happier, check out Achor’s recent Harvard Business Review Magazine cover story, explaining, as Achor put it, that “happiness leads to greater levels of profits. In the article I described some things you can do at a team organizational level” to promote it.

(I edited this article slightly. For the full article you can visit: http://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/happiness-makes-your-brain-work-better.html)
